Sharing Internet Access with ISDN Modem
and ProxyServer:
This
instruction is applicable to any LAN that uses 10/100 baseT hub. Either Microsoft, Novell, or Unix network
would work. No File Server is needed.
However TCP/IP protocol must be implemented on all the computers.
ISDN Modem Setup
- Before ISDN modem can be
setup, an ISDN line must be made available from a local phone company.
ISDN single channel costs about $50/month at 64 k/s speed. It may take up to 45 days for the line
installation can be scheduled.
It may take another 10 days for the installation to complete.
- Plug in ISDN line to the
modem, and connect an analog phone set to the phone jack on the modem.
Dial a phone number to verify the ISDN connection first. You should be able to talk via an
ISDN line to a regular phone number.
If no dial tone, then call the phone company to do a loop-test. If loop-test fails, the a service
request would be needed.
- Plug in phone cord from the
Modem to the Multitech 3 Serial ProxyServer. Plug in to the 1st serial port. Connect ProxyServer to a PC Serial
port with the cable provided.
- Install software on the PC to
configure Modem and ProxyServer.

- On each and every PC: Right
click Network Neighborhood icon, Open Properties for TCP/IP protocol;
set IP address (must be unique, such 216.216.189.195), and Subnet Mask
(255.255.255.0); If one of the
Server is running DHCP host service, then you do not need to enter a
static IP. Gateway IP is the ProxyServer’s IP; DNS is the ISP’s Domain
Name Server’s IP. You may enter
up to 3 different DNS’ IP’s. If hosting own DNS, then use that host’s IP
as DNS along with ISP’s DNS.
- ProxyServer has DHCP hosting
feature, so there is no need to use NT Server’s options.: Set an available IP range should you
opt this feature.
- Exit and reboot all computers
- Open Internet Explorer and
start Connection Wizard. Choose
connection type=LAN. And AutoDetect
Proxy Server.
- Open Outlook Express
Tools/Account to setup mail Servers, and user account
