DCS: Unix/NT Server Configuration Support

Deliver solutions since 1987.
File and Printer Sharing between NT and Unix:

This instruction is applicable to NT 4.0/2000 Server and IBM AIX 4.15 on a RS/6000 workstation.  Both machines are connected in the same LAN with static IP’s.  Microsoft Unix Service Add-in is available for free download.  We suggest, however, using Intergraph’s DiskAccess and DiskShare (free download) for both NT 4.0 or NT 2000 Servers.  Service Pack 6 is installed in NT 4.0.  The following settings on NT will allow users to access files on NT or Unix machines via Network Neighborhood/NFS Network/.

NT Server

  • Download and Install DiskShare and DiskAccess from http://www.ingr.com/nfs/download.asp on NT
  • Open DiskAccess  Administrator Utility
  • Authentification: type administrator ID and password for your NT, leave NIS and PCNFSD blank; check Authentificate at System Logon, Display This Dialog on Connect and Display Confirmation
  • Mount Point: No change from default
  • Symbolic Link: Check Resolve Symbolic Links, Display Unresolvable Links
  • Configure NFS LAN’s:  Edit DefaultLAN:  LAN address, Subnet Mask= blanks, Broadcast Address =216.216.189.255 (change the first three parts where necessary); Check Display Addresses, and check when browsing
  • Other settings use default
  • Exit DiskAccess Administrator Utility
  • Open DiskShare Server
  • Under Share Options: Check Allow Anonymous UID, check Symbolic Link Support, optionally type C:\ under Share Name, DCS01 under Alias. Leave the rest set as default.
  • Server Options:  Leave every fields set by default.  –2 for unmapped UserID and GroupID.
  • Security Permissions: Check both Full Control’s
  • Exit and reboot NT
  • Under My Computer/Folder properties set NFS sharing rights
  • Reboot NT again

mount /export/aix_data

NFS Export the AIX File System and Set Hosts with root & client Access

1. From a command line with root permission, enter smitty mknfsexp.

2. From the Add a Directory to Exports List menu, enter the name of the file system to be exported. Example:

PATHNAME of directory to export /export/aix_data

3. Enter the appropriate information for HOSTS allowed root access and HOSTS & NETGROUPS allowed client access.

4. Press the enter key, then press the F10 to exit to a command prompt.

Set the File System Security

1. From a command line with root permission, use the chown and chmod commands to set the appropriate permissions on the directory and files and directories within the directory. Example:

chown root.system /export/aix_data

chmod 755 /export/aix_data

mkdir /export/aix_data/catadm

mkdir /export/aix_data/catusr

chown catadm.catia /export/aix_data/catadm

chown catusr.catia /export/aix_data/catusr

chmod 755 /export/aix_data/*
